Meet our County Council candidates

There are already three Green Borough Councillors in Surrey – and 140 Green councillors in England as a whole – motivated, passionate people who are achieving great things for their towns and cities.

This May, you have a chance to elect hard-working Greens to Surrey County Council as well.

There are seven Green candidates in the Reigate and Banstead area.

Banstead, Woodmansterne and Chipstead – Philip Wilson

Philip WilsonPhilip Wilson is a vocal campaigner who has either worked or lived in the Borough for the past three years. He says, “Stopping development on green belt land, cuts to local services and challenging the one-party domination of the Council are key issues for the Green Party in Banstead, Woodmansterne and Chipstead. “

Earlswood and Reigate South – Katie Smith

Katie SmithKatie Smith is married and mum to one teenager and works as a digital strategist. Katie says, “I was born in Redhill and have lived in the area most of my life. I believe our community deserves better from our County Council, and I want to make sure that commercial interests are properly balanced against the real needs of local people.”

Nork and Tattenhams – Derek Smith

Derek SmithDerek is a retired professional engineer and lives in Redhill with his wife. He has been a Green Party member for 20 years and is the secretary and treasurer of the local branch. Derek says, “We’re causing so much environmental damage that I seriously worry for the future for my four grand-children. The Green Party is the only party which takes this seriously enough.”

Redhill East – Jonathan Essex

Jonathan EssexJonathan Essex is a Civil Engineer, an active community campaigner and Borough Councillor. He says, “Many important issues – including roads and transport, social care and schools – are overseen by County, not Reigate and Banstead. We need Green Councillors to bring the County Council alive to the needs of its residents.”

Redhill West – Sarah Finch

Sarah Finch is a journalist working for Save the Children, a mother and a Borough Councillor in Redhill. Sarah says, “We have shown that Greens can be an effective opposition in Redhill. We now need an effective opposition in the County too. Even with a large Conservative majority, we can make them work harder.”

Reigate – Bryn Truscott

Bryn TruscottBryn Truscott is a software developer and a Borough Councillor. Bryn says, “We’ve seen time after time on the Borough Council how the complete dominance of one party leads to flawed decision making – recently on the issue of Green Belt development. Surrey County Council is similarly one-sided, and needs some opposition.”

Tadworth & Walton – Alistair Morten

Alistair lives with his family in Walton and works in local government housing around fuel poverty issues. Alistair says, “I want local people to have the chance to vote for the Green Party, in order to make living in Surrey more just, inclusive and sustainable.”
