Green Wins across Surrey – breakthroughs onto five Councils

Five of the six Green Councillors: L-R Steve McKenna, Sue Sinden, Hal Brown, Ruth Ritter and Jonathan Essex

Green Council seats across Surrey soared from three to 14 in local elections held on 2 May.

Greens broke through onto five Councils: Waverley; Guildford; Surrey Heath; Runnymede and Spelthorne.

In Reigate and Banstead – where all out elections were held because of boundary changes – Greens took over two seats. Redhill East and Earlswood and Whitebushes now have six Green councillors, who all won with big majorities.

Steve Williams secured 48% of the vote in Godalming Charterhouse and Martin D’Arcy won in Bramley, Busbridge and Hascombe – the first Greens to get onto Waverley Borough Council. Sharon Galliford and Peter Barnett also secured 48% in Lightwater Ward on Surrey Heath Council.

The two new Green councillors in the Staines ward on Spelthorne Council are Tom Lagden and Jan Doerfel and Diana Jones is on Guildford Borough Council. Michael Brierley got onto Runnymede Council for Addlestone North Ward.

“We’re delighted that after all the hard work by Greens across Surrey we now have councillors who can work hard for local residents on six Councils”, said Vicki Elcoate, Chair of the Surrey Federation of Green Parties.

“People on the doorstep have been telling us they’re fed up with the main parties because of Brexit and the spotlight has been on the climate emergency which has helped put Green issues into people’s minds. Our new councillors will be working to secure policies which protect our environment, reflect the climate emergency we face and support local residents”.
